Education
Education and early development of the brain is highly influenced by exposure to the world and many of the things it has to offer. Children that have been stimulated with positive experiences often have a much larger brain size and capacity then those that are neglected or grow up with crime and violence.
Highest Level of Education Obtained
What does this measure?
The term highest level of education obtained refers to the highest certificate, diploma or degree completed by a person. The portion of the population that completed each type of education noted is the portion that completed it as their highest certificate, diploma or degree. Education level (such as the proportion of adults who have not completed high school) is also a way of measuring neighborhood socioeconomic status.
Why is this important?
There are real benefits from living in more educated neighbourhoods, regardless of one’s own family background. The educational attainment of other adults in the child’s community had a strong positive effect on children’s well-being and outcomes. Also, higher community education levels substantially mitigated the risk of poor maternal education. Furthermore, women with lower education levels are more vulnerable to adverse birth outcomes, such as elevated crude risks of preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age birth, stillbirth and death and death in early infancy. Education of parents tends to have a larger, better measured impact than most other characteristics.
